Regional Transport Manager (JHB) (AA only) – HMRTM

Job Summary

The Regional Transport Manager is responsible for overseeing the planning, coordination, and execution of product shipments within a specific geographical area. This is not an operational, but in essence a commercial head role that is fully responsible for growing the transport business.

The incumbent must also ensure that appropriate processes and procedures are designed and implemented, in order to ensure that the team managed are able to conduct all the operational activities effectively and efficiently.

The incumbent will also maintain and continuously review the most effective and efficient structure and team, in order to ensure the delivery of committed services by the branch.

Experience and Qualifications

  • 15 years management experience within a cross-border road transport environment (DRC, Zambia, Tanzania, SA corridors) ESSENTIAL.
  • Diploma or degree in Transport Management or Transport economics advantageous
  • Knowledge in Oracle will be advantage.
  • Proficient in Excel, Word, Outlook and the ability to learn other software programs.
  • Must be able to apply expertise as subject matter expert and continuously modernize operational environment by developing new technology-based solutions.
  • Customs Knowledge (bond, remover, border)
  • Knowledge of Incoterms
  • Basic accounting knowledge

Areas of Responsibility

Customer Focus

  • Demonstrating a service-oriented attitude towards customers in all situations.
  • Overseeing the planning and execution of shipments to meet customer requirements.
  • Maintaining communication with customers regarding delivery schedules
  • Addressing any customer concerns or issues related to transportation.
  • Striving to enhance the overall customer experience through efficient and timely delivery services.

 

Day to Day Management

  • Ensuring the transport operation meets performance and safety targets, monitoring and reporting to senior management.
  • Writing reports, presenting options and recommendations to clients and senior management.
  • Advising on policy and strategic developments
  • Negotiating contracts, managing contracts, and developing new business opportunities
  • Resolving unscheduled delays, making decisions in challenging situations
  • Analyzing passenger/customer satisfaction surveys and initiating projects for improvement
  • Liaising and negotiating with various stakeholders, including planning authorities.
  • Identifying transport problems, developing transport models, and exploring alternative transport means
  • Engaging in strategic planning and project management work, especially in more senior positions

Strategic Management

  • Strategic Planning: Developing and implementing long-term plans for efficient warehouse operations, including optimizing routes, schedules, and resources to enhance productivity and cost-effectiveness.
  • Decision-Making: Making informed decisions swiftly to adapt to changing circumstances, such as rerouting due to unexpected challenges, to ensure timely and cost-effective deliveries
  • Technical Proficiency: Leveraging technology and industry-specific tools like warehouse management systems to enhance operational efficiency, data-driven decision-making, and resource allocation.
  • Leadership and Team Management: Leading and motivating warehouse staff to create a positive work environment, delegating tasks effectively, providing training and support, and fostering a cohesive and productive team.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensuring compliance with warehouse regulations, safety standards, environmental responsibilities, and legal requirements to avoid issues and maintain a smooth warehouse operation.

Financial Impact

  • Developing a solid understanding of the results of the business unit and effectively communicating such reports on a monthly basis including budgetary variance analysis.
  • Developing and implementing cost control measures to ensure the business unit is run on an efficient basis.
  • Preparation and presentation of budgets for the business unit on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis.
  • Comprehensive understanding of shipment-related costings and margins.
  • Shipment file management
