Instrumentation & Control and SCADA Engineer – CVZIACASCADAE

Main job function

A well-established renewable client is seeking an Instrumentation & Control and SCADA Engineer to join its Engineering and Construction team, based in Johannesburg, to support E&C activities in the Sub-Saharan African region. The position, in cooperation with other Units, will ensure the execution of engineering projects assigned in complete compliance with best practices, quality, safety and environmental requirements, as well as compliance with schedules and costs, also managing external resources. Addresses and solves technical issues related to own field of expertise and by means of own knowledge in order to meet project requirements. Professional engineering activities about I&C, SCADA, Control Systems and Power Automation associated with renewable electric power plant. Development of all I&C and SCADA design activities during the entire life cycle of a project: from the feasibility study and early works to the executive engineering, construction and start up phases. Purchase order Specifications for activating external engineering support. Managing and supervision of the design and the engineering activities of external third parties. SCADA technical specifications and network architecture, when required, in support to Procurement unit during bid phases. Follow up and review of technical documents issued by EPC contractors and/or suppliers, assuring the full compliance of the design with EGP specifications and engineering best practices. Coordination of design activities with other members of project team. Support to Design Units and Project Manager for the estimation of project CAPEX, OPEX and time scheduling.

Qualifications 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Computer Science, Automation or Mechatronics or equivalent.
  • Master’s Degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Information Security, and/or Business Administration will be considered an advantage.
  • 5 – 10 years’ experience in a SCADA/ICS Engineer role.
  • Experience in a renewable energy or power generation.
  • CRISC, GICSP, CISSP Certification an advantage
  • Proven track record in leading SCADA system projects, architectures, and processes.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage projects for controlling industrial processes, with preference for power generation, distribution, and/or transmission grid applications.
  • Broad ICT infrastructure knowledge with in-depth, up-to-date expertise in SCADA systems, Industrial Control Systems (ICS), Operational Technology (OT), and the South African Grid Code
  • Experience in ICS networking and security.
  • Experience with Energy Management Systems (EMS) and their supporting architectures. • Knowledge of major IP-encapsulated process control protocols: Modbus TCP, PROFINET, DNP3, IEC 61850, IEC 60870-5-101/103/104, and ICCP/TASE.2.
  • Knowledge of OT/ICS security standards and guidance (e.g., IEC 62443, IEC 62351, NERC CIP, NIST SP 800- 82).
  • Knowledge of OPC technologies (OPC UA, OPC DA, OPC XML-DA).
  • Knowledge of redundancy, failover, and disaster recovery for SCADA systems.
  • Good understanding of OT security risks and vulnerabilities in operational environments.
  • Solid understanding of IT/OT fundamentals and their integration.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Windows Server/Active Directory and networking architectures from both server and client perspectives.
  • Good knowledge of ISO/OSI layered model.
  • Sound knowledge of IP protocols and their services at the application layer such as: RIP, RDP, FTP, HTTP, BGP, SSH and Telnet.
  • Familiarity with information security management standards (e.g., ISO/IEC 27001 and related 27000- series).
  • Knowledge of Project Management methodology and tools.
  • Experience with network and virtualization technologies (e.g., switches, firewalls, Hyper-V; UTM devices) is advantageous.
  • Experience with leading SCADA/HMI suites and data historians, including alarm management and trending.
  • Experience with OT change control, patch management, vulnerability management, and incident response tailored to ICS.
  • SAP experience will be considered an advantage

 

 Criteria

  • Execute the Due Diligences, Feasibility Studies, Design for Permitting and Detailed Design (shop drawings, IFC drawings) for renewable power plants (wind, solar and storage) – related to own field of expertise
  • Review for validation of the Due Diligence, Feasibility Studies, Design for Permitting and Detailed Design (shop drawings and IFC drawings) – related to own field of expertise
  • Support the other units within the Organization for assuring the quality of the construction (supplies and works) of the renewable power plants (wind, solar and storage) – related to own field of expertise
  • Support the other units within the Organization during the start-up and commissioning of the renewable power plants (wind, solar, and storage) – related to own field of expertise
  • Support the other units within the Organization for the Overall planning of the project’s activities – related to own field of expertise
  • Lead, perform and support the other units estimating the costs for the construction of renewable power plants (wind, solar and storage) – related to own field of expertise
  • Lead, perform and support the other units the risk assessment related to the construction of renewable power plants (wind, solar, and storage) – related to own field of expertise INTERNAL
  • Develop, create and update on a regular basis the technical specifications to be used for any RFPs to be issued by the Organization – related to own field of expertise
  • Lead, perform and support the other units for the preparation of the technical evaluation of the offers submitted by the Vendors for any RFPs sent out by the Organization – related to own field of expertise
  • Manage, with the support of other units within the Organization, the engineering service contracts
  • Support the other units within the Organization for the management supply, construction and commissioning contracts entered into with external service providers related to own field of expertise
  • Support the other units within the Organization for evaluating the optimal design strategy related to the construction of renewable power plants (wind, solar and storage) – related to own field of expertise
  • Support the other units within the Organization for data integrating in remote monitoring and control center related to the construction of renewable power plants (wind, solar and storage) – related to own field of expertise
  • Support the other units within the Organization for designing the optimized solution for network infrastructure and communication services related to the construction of renewable power plants (wind, solar and storage) – related to own field of expertise
  • Lead, perform and support the other units within the Organization in providing technical approval and supervision during testing activities related to the construction of renewable power plants (wind, solar, storage) – related to own field of expertise
  • Support the Design to Value Unit in evaluating optimal design strategy.
  • Manage technical topics about field instrumentation, power automation, control systems and data acquisition systems, network architectures, communication protocols, HMI and functional diagrams.
  • Provide technical approval and supervision for any necessary tests related to SCADA and Control Systems (FAT\SAT).
  • Support the Construction Unit in technical issues during construction, commissioning, test and start up phases, site inspection when necessary.
  • Support the O&M Unit for the Plant SCADA system integration in O&M remote monitoring and control center.
  • Support the project management team for the Plant SCADA system integration with ESKOM during execution phase.
  • Support the Digital Hub (ICT) for the determination, sizing and budgeting of the best solution for communication services in each location, according to the needs of the remote operation and the services to be provided.
  • Ensure equipment design in accordance with the current Health, Safety and Environmental legislation.
  • Review lessons learned and identify improvements in existing products, procedures and processes; developing cost effective solutions to satisfy specifications.
  • Working on multiple projects simultaneously.
