Engineering Underwriter – SSEU

Main job function 

The process of underwriting risk requires knowledge of the engineering disciplines and processes, construction plant and machinery, risk management, problem identification and solving, construction contracts, insurance policies and reinsurance restrictions.

Before a quote can be generated, the contractual position must be determined, the proposer must be investigated, the risk must be assessed, and a decision must be made whether the Insurer will benefit from the business.

The process of underwriting requires logical and unbiased thought, knowledge of risk and assessment of the probable cost of claims. Acceptance of any risk is subject to the risk falling within the Insurer’s capacity and internal acceptance guidelines.

Key Responsibilities:

 Operational

    • Sound knowledge of all engineering insurance policies.
    • Actively manage and oversee start to end each quote request.
    • Contribute to the growth and profitability of the Company by providing excellent service and maintaining relationships
  • Manage and organize day-to-day operations by establishing priorities to ensure all quote requests are dealt with and maintain the standards of the underwriting department.
  • Knowledge of the Proposer (insured)
  • Understand the risk and number of probable claims.
  • Assess the risk of loss or damage.
  • Calculate the terms of the quote and which conditions are required.
  • Processing quotes on the policy management system
  • Facultative reinsurance & co-insurance placement
  • Assist the Claims Department
  • Relationship Management
    • Liaising in a professional manner with brokers and other insurers
      • provide constructive feedback to brokers and management
      • respond to queries within 12 hours
    • Work with different people internally and externally to improve service, efficiency, and improve presentation of information.

 

Experience

Five years relevant insurance experience required

 

Education

BSc Civil, full FAIS Qualification and Regulatory exam
